E 1.1.5 ACCORDING TO THE BIBLE : FROM WHAT SHOULD ONE REPENT ?
1.FROM TURNING TOWARDS IDOLS / FOREIGN GODS / FALSE GODS:
“Therefore say to the house of Israel, ‘Thus says the Lord God : “Repent, turn away from your idols, and turn your faces away from all your abominations. Ezek. 14:6
… you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God. 1 Thess 1:9
“put away the foreign gods which are among you, and incline your heart to the Lord God of Israel.” Josh 24:23
2.FROM TEMPTATION AND SIN:
King David – Repented from having sinned against the Lord 2 Sam.12:13a
King David had been tempted and committed sin with Bathsheba, was convicted by the Holy Spirit, repented, confessed his sin and received forgiveness of his sin 2 Sam.12; Psa.51 :1–12
3.FROM ALL TRANSGRESSIONS: “Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways,” says the Lord God.”Repent, and turn from all your transgressions, so that iniquity will not be your ruin. Ezek. 18:30
4.FROM ONE’s EVIL WAYS :
The People of Nineveh – Turned from their evil ways & escaped the Judgement of God to overthrow it. Jonah 3:10
5.FROM NOT BEARING FRUITS WORTHY OF REPENTANCE:
But when he (JOHN THE BAPTIST) saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, “Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
Therefore, bear fruits worthy of repentance. Matt 3:7-8
6a.FROM NOT BELIEVING THE GOSPEL:
“The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.” …. JESUS said. Mark 1:15
Biblical Example: SAUL, THE PAUL repented towards God and accepted the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Acts 20:21
6b.FROM NOT BELIEVING THE TRUTH:
REPENT AND COME TO KNOW* THE TRUTH – *PERCEIVE / RECOGNIZE /ACKNOWLEDGE 2 Tim 2:25
6c.FROM NOT BELIEVING THAT JESUS IS THE CHRIST:
I (Paul) testifying to Jews, and also to Greeks, REPENTANCE TOWARD GOD AND FAITH TOWARD OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST – to believe that Jesus is the Christ (the Messiah), the Son of God, the Saviour of the World
7.FROM GOING ASTRAY IN ONE OWN’s WAY: All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned, every one, to his own way; and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. Isa. 53:6
Biblical Example: PARABLE OF THE PRODIGAL SON: Going in his own ways – Wicked living, Coming back to senses, Going back to the father in Repentance, Confession of the wrongs / sins, Restoration of Relationship. Luke 15 : 11-22
8.FROM WRONG DOINGS:
FIRST BE RECONCILED TO YOUR BROTHER, AND THEN COME BACK Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. Matt. 5:23-24
HAVE PITY ON THE POOR : He who has pity on the poor lends to the Lord, and He will pay back what he has given. Prov. 19:17
ZACCHAEUS told Jesus : Will give half of my goods to the poor & give back four-fold of anything taken by false accusation (Restitution) Luke 19 : 1 to 10
9.FROM APOSTASY* & BACKSLIDING – BELIEVERS MUST REPENT :
“Return, you backsliding children, And I will heal your backslidings.” “Indeed we do come to You, For You are the Lord our God. Jer 3:22
PETER, who denied Jesus Christ, went back to Jesus Matthew 26 : 74 , 75
*APOSTASY = one who renounces his faith or allegiance to Christ
10.FROM DEAD WORKS*
Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to perfection, not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, of the doctrine of baptisms, of laying on of hands, of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. Heb 6:1,2
*DEAD WORKS are works done without Repentance towards God and done without faith in His Son Jesus Christ.
Example : Even religious activities like prayer … or Ministry … can be considered dead works, if they are not motivated by genuine love for God or love for souls.
